The Greater Picture
Evolving is a constant in life. From our first words and steps to beginning the terrifying adventure and journey that is the K-12 (kindergarten through twelfth grade, also called senior year here in America), life is absolutely and utterly all about the choices each and every one of us navigate in life. There are an indefinite amount of decisions made day in and day out, from what time in the morning to rise at, what to wear, eat for breakfast (do you prepare your piping hot coffee and hot meal at home, or instead, take the route of spending a few dollars for a quick bite out?) Simply broken down, the grand scheme can be approached in much more dynamic ways than what we typically view it at.
Recently, I experienced a full circle moment during the pandemic in the spring of 2020. My great-grandmother, Myrtle has always been there for me, even in the afterlife, looking out for our family from the other side. She visits us in our dreams and continues to live on in our memories. Nanny loves to receive a perm at her hair salon, but, when she was ninety, they burned her scalp. When she was ninety-one, I was visiting her in Oklahoma City from the Seattle area, and my grandfather, Russell drove us to the Mustang Walmart (also the town where her senior citizen center is) so that we could have our hair cut. At the time, I was twenty-one years old, which is also the last time I rocked my bodacious, long curls. When my mom Nancy was stationed overseas due to being in the army, my great-grandparents Dillard and Myrtle took me in after my grandparents had to go to school and work. I was with Nanny when I had my first haircut. The feeling of being with Nanny who is my best friend, rock, savior, and everything in between, the first woman I remember truly loving, was just emotional for me and is a memory I will truly cherish for the rest of my days here.
Let us take a moment to rejoice in the beauty that is life: to learn, grow, smile, cry, and shed some light together. Welcome to my blog. This is the roaring twenties chapter of my life.
